4-Day Southern Tanzania Escape

OVERVIEW

TURN SOUTH. FIND MORE SPACE.

Northern Tanzania may get most of the postcards.

The south has other ideas.

This compact four-day journey introduces two contrasting wildernesses: the open plains and mountain-framed landscapes of Mikumi, followed by the rivers, lakes and woodland of Nyerere.

And here, safari isn’t limited to four wheels.

Nyerere adds the possibility of exploring by boat, changing your perspective from dusty tracks to channels shared with hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds.

Fewer crowds.

Different landscapes.

Four days that feel much farther from Dar es Salaam than the map suggests.

DAY 01 / DAR ES SALAAM → MIKUMI - LEAVE THE CITY. FIND THE PLAINS.

Leave Dar es Salaam early and travel west toward Mikumi National Park.

As the city disappears behind you, Tanzania gradually opens into rural landscapes before the mountains surrounding Mikumi begin to appear.

Enter the park and begin your first game drive.

Mikumi’s open plains offer opportunities to see elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and antelope, while lions patrol the wider ecosystem.

Spend the afternoon exploring before making your way to your lodge or tented camp.

Dar this morning.

Wild Tanzania tonight.

DAY 02 / MIKUMI → NYERERE - ONE LAST DRIVE. THEN GO DEEPER SOUTH.

Rise early for another game drive through Mikumi.

Morning is an excellent time to explore while temperatures are cooler and wildlife is active.

Search the plains and waterholes before leaving the park and beginning your journey toward Nyerere.

The landscape becomes increasingly remote as you travel deeper into southern Tanzania.

Arrive at your lodge or camp near Nyerere later in the day.

Settle in.

Tomorrow, safari leaves the road behind.

OVERNIGHT
Midrange Lodge / Tented Camp, Nyerere Area

MEALS
Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

DAY 03 / NYERERE - TRADE FOUR WHEELS FOR THE WATER.

Spend the morning exploring Nyerere by vehicle.

This enormous wilderness contains woodland, open grassland, lakes and channels associated with the Rufiji River system.

Look for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, antelope and predators while your guide explores the network of tracks through the reserve.

Later, change perspective.

Board a boat for a safari along the waterways, where hippos surface nearby, crocodiles rest along the banks and an extraordinary variety of birds gathers around the water.

As afternoon turns toward evening, watch the sun fall across the river.

No traffic jam.

Unless hippos count.

OVERNIGHT
Midrange Lodge / Tented Camp, Nyerere Area

MEALS
Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

DAY 04 / NYERERE → DAR ES SALAAM - ONE LAST MORNING IN THE SOUTH.

Wake for breakfast surrounded by the quieter rhythm of southern Tanzania.

Depending on your departure arrangements, there may be time for a short morning activity before beginning the journey back toward Dar es Salaam.

Watch wilderness gradually give way to villages, farmland and eventually the energy of the city.

Arrive in Dar es Salaam for your hotel, airport transfer or onward journey to the coast.

Four days.

Two parks.

And proof that Tanzania doesn’t end with the Serengeti.
