5-Day Tanzania Under Canvas

OVERVIEW

SLEEP CLOSER, TO THE WILD.

This is Tanzania without too many layers between you and the landscape.

Five days take you from Tarangire’s elephant country into the immense Serengeti, where two nights give you time to explore rather than simply pass through, before finishing inside the natural amphitheatre of Ngorongoro Crater.

By day, travel with your private Wildpack guide through three remarkable wildlife areas. By night, trade hotel corridors for canvas, campfire conversations and the sounds of the bush beyond your tent.

Simple? Yes. Ordinary? Not remotely.

DAY 01 / TARANGIRE - WHERE THE GIANTS GATHER.

Meet your Wildpack guide in Arusha and head toward Tarangire National Park for your first day in the bush.

The landscape quickly takes on a character of its own: enormous baobabs, dusty tracks, open woodland and the Tarangire River winding through it all. Elephants are the stars here, often appearing in impressive family groups, but the park is also home to giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and a healthy population of predators.

Spend the afternoon following whatever the wild puts in your path before heading to camp as the day’s heat begins to fade.

Your first night under canvas begins here.

DAY 02 / SERENGETI - INTO THE ENDLESS.

After an early breakfast, leave Tarangire behind and travel toward the Ngorongoro Highlands before continuing across the conservation area.

Eventually, the road drops toward a landscape that seems to have misplaced its edges.

Welcome to the Serengeti.

From here, the drive to camp becomes part of the safari. Search the open plains for lions resting in the grass, cheetahs watching from elevated ground, giraffes moving between acacias and herds scattered across the horizon.

During migration periods, the scale can change completely as vast numbers of wildebeest and zebra move through different parts of the ecosystem.

Reach your campsite toward evening, with your first Serengeti sunset unfolding around you.

DAY 03 / SERENGETI - NOWHERE ELSE TO BE.

Today belongs entirely to the Serengeti.

Set out after breakfast and follow the day’s wildlife activity rather than a rigid route. Your guide will use tracks, recent sightings, animal behaviour and years of experience to decide where to explore.

One moment might find you watching a pride of lions resting after a hunt. The next could bring elephants crossing the road, a leopard hidden among acacia branches or a cheetah scanning the plains.

Stop for a picnic lunch somewhere in the wilderness before continuing into the afternoon.

There is no need to collect sightings like trophies. When something is worth watching, we switch off the engine and stay awhile.

DAY 04 / NGORONGORO - ONE LAST MORNING ON THE PLAINS.

Wake inside the Serengeti and head out for another morning game drive while temperatures are cooler and wildlife is active.

There is still time to follow tracks, revisit promising areas or simply see what the plains have arranged overnight.

Later, begin the journey east toward Ngorongoro. Watch the endless grasslands gradually give way to the rising highlands as you leave the Serengeti behind.

Arrive near the crater rim toward evening and settle into camp. Tomorrow morning, the road goes down.

DAY 05 / NGORONGORO CRATER - INSIDE AN ANCIENT WORLD.

Rise early and descend from the crater rim into one of Tanzania’s most extraordinary wildlife landscapes.

The Ngorongoro Crater floor holds grasslands, forests, wetlands and freshwater pools within the walls of an ancient volcanic caldera. Its variety of habitats supports an exceptional concentration of wildlife.

Spend the morning searching for lions, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippos and hyenas. Keep an eye on the open grasslands for the endangered black rhino, one of the crater’s most prized sightings.

Enjoy a picnic lunch before slowly making your way back toward the crater rim.

From here, the journey continues to Arusha.

Five days ago, you left the city for the wild. You return with considerably more stories than luggage.
