7-Day Rongai Route

OVERVIEW

SAME SUMMIT. DIFFERENT SIDE.

Most Kilimanjaro climbers approach from the south or west.

Rongai comes in from another direction entirely.

Beginning on Kilimanjaro’s northern side near the Kenyan border, this route offers a quieter approach through remote landscapes before passing beneath the dramatic Mawenzi massif and eventually joining the summit route from Kibo Hut.

The scenery changes gradually from forest and moorland to stark high-altitude desert.

Then comes summit night.

After reaching Uhuru Peak, the route descends on the greener southern side through Mweka, meaning you don’t simply retrace your footsteps home.

Seven days.

One mountain.

A considerably quieter way to meet it.

DAY 01 / RONGAI GATE → SIMBA CAMP - START ON THE QUIET SIDE.

Travel from Arusha or Moshi toward Kilimanjaro’s northern side and the Rongai trailhead.

After registration and meeting your mountain crew, begin walking through the lower slopes.

The trail passes through forest before gradually entering more open terrain.

Compared with Kilimanjaro’s busier approaches, Rongai often feels noticeably quieter from the beginning.

Walk slowly.

Find your rhythm.

The summit can wait.

Tonight, Simba Camp is enough.

DAY 02 / SIMBA CAMP → KIKELELWA CAMP - THE TREES FALL AWAY. THE MOUNTAIN APPEARS.

Continue upward through increasingly open moorland.

The forest disappears behind you and the scale of Kilimanjaro begins revealing itself.

Depending on conditions and the exact itinerary used by your guiding team, today’s route may include a gradual climb through the Second Cave area before continuing toward Kikelewa.

Views toward Kibo grow larger while the jagged outline of Mawenzi begins demanding attention.

Arrive at camp and settle in.

You’re climbing higher now.

So everything slows down.

Pole pole.

DAY 03 / KIKELELWA → MAWENZI TARN - WALK TOWARD THE JAGGED ONE.

Today’s climb is shorter but steeper.

Continue toward Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s dramatic eastern summit.

Unlike the broad, snow-capped dome of Kibo, Mawenzi rises in sharp volcanic spires.

The trail climbs into increasingly rugged terrain before reaching Mawenzi Tarn, tucked beneath the mountain’s dramatic cliffs.

The setting is extraordinary.

And wonderfully strange.

Spend the afternoon resting and allowing your body to adjust to the altitude.

DAY 04 / MAWENZI TARN - TODAY, WE STAY HIGH.

You’re not moving camp today.

That’s intentional.

Use the day for acclimatization, with your guide leading a hike to higher ground before returning to Mawenzi Tarn to sleep.

The principle is simple:

Climb high. Sleep lower.

This extra day gives your body valuable time to adapt before moving toward Kibo and the final summit attempt.

Spend the remainder of the afternoon resting, eating and hydrating.

Up here, doing less is part of doing it properly.

DAY 05 / MAWENZI TARN → KIBO HUT - CROSS THE SADDLE.

Leave Mawenzi behind and cross the broad alpine desert known as the Saddle, stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo.

The landscape becomes increasingly stark.

Very little grows here.

Ahead, Kibo dominates the horizon.

Continue slowly across the high-altitude terrain toward Kibo Hut.

Once there, eat, hydrate and prepare your equipment for summit night.

Check your layers.

Headlamp.

Gloves.

Water.

Then rest.

Tonight will be short.

The next day will not.

OVERNIGHT
Kibo Hut / Camp Area

ALTITUDE
Approx. 4,700 m

Breakfast · Lunch · Early Dinner

DAY 06 / KIBO → UHURU PEAK → HOROMBO - WALK THROUGH THE DARK.

Wake around midnight and prepare for the summit.

Begin climbing slowly through the darkness toward the crater rim.

This is the hardest section of the route.

Cold.

Altitude.

Steep terrain.

And several hours where progress is measured almost entirely in footsteps.

Eventually reach Gilman’s Point at approximately 5,685 metres on the crater rim.

The horizon begins changing.

But we’re not finished.

Continue around the rim toward Stella Point and onward to the highest point of Kilimanjaro.

UHURU PEAK

5,895 M

The roof of Africa.

Stand there.

Look around.

Take the photograph.

Then take a minute without one.

From Uhuru, begin the long descent.

Return toward Kibo before continuing much farther down to Horombo.

Your knees may submit a formal complaint.

They’ll recover.

OVERNIGHT

DAY 07 / HOROMBO → MARANGU GATE - BACK TO GREEN.

After breakfast, continue descending.

The barren alpine landscape gives way to moorland.

Then forest returns.

Air becomes warmer and considerably richer in oxygen.

Eventually reach Marangu Gate and complete the final park formalities.

Successful climbers receive their summit certificates before meeting the transfer vehicle back to Moshi or Arusha.

You started on Kilimanjaro’s quiet northern side.

Seven days later, you’ve walked across the mountain and come out somewhere else.

That’s a proper journey.
