7-Day Remote Tanzania by Air
OVERVIEW
WHEN ONE WILD ISN’T ENOUGH.
The Serengeti is famous for good reason.
Ruaha feels like a secret.
This seven-day fly-in journey connects two remarkably different sides of Tanzania without losing days to long road transfers.
Begin with three nights among the open plains and big cats of the Serengeti. Then board a bush aircraft and travel south to Ruaha, where baobab-studded valleys, rugged hills and the Great Ruaha River create an entirely different safari landscape.
Fewer vehicles.
Wilder horizons.
And the rather wonderful feeling that Tanzania has suddenly become enormous again.
DAY 01 / ARUSHA → SERENGETI - LEAVE THE ROAD ON THE GROUND.
Board a scheduled light aircraft from Arusha and fly directly into the Serengeti.
Watch northern Tanzania unfold beneath the wing before landing at a bush airstrip surrounded by wilderness.
Your guide will meet you on arrival.
From here, the transfer to camp becomes your first game drive.
Search for lions around rocky kopjes, giraffes moving across the plains, elephants near woodland and perhaps cheetahs watching from a termite mound.
Arrive at your luxury tented camp later in the day.
Tomorrow morning, you’re already exactly where you came to be.

DAY 02 / SERENGETI - LET THE PLAINS CHOOSE THE ROUTE.
Head out early with your safari guide.
There is no fixed circuit today.
Follow wildlife activity across the plains, searching for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and the Serengeti’s enormous variety of grazing animals.
During migration periods, wildebeest and zebra may completely reshape the day’s plan.
Stay out with a picnic lunch or return to camp for a slower afternoon before another game drive.
Finish somewhere with a horizon.
Preferably with something cold in your hand.

DAY 03 / SERENGETI - STAY FOR ANOTHER STORY.
One full day introduces you to the Serengeti.
The second lets you settle into it.
Head in a different direction, return to a promising area or spend longer with whatever wildlife captures your attention.
An optional hot-air balloon safari can also be arranged for an early-morning view of the plains from above.
Spend the afternoon on your final Serengeti game drive before returning to camp.
Tomorrow, Tanzania changes character completely.

DAY 04 / SERENGETI → RUAHA - CHANGE THE VIEW FROM 10,000 FEET.
After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip and board your flight south.
This is more than transportation.
Watch Tanzania change beneath you as the northern plains disappear and the landscapes of central Tanzania take their place.
Land in Ruaha National Park and meet your camp guide.
Almost immediately, the difference becomes apparent.
More rugged.
More remote.
More baobabs.
Fewer vehicles.
Game drive toward camp, keeping watch for elephants, giraffes, antelope and predators along the way.
Welcome to the south.

DAY 05 / RUAHA - WELCOME TO THE WILDER SIDE.
Head out early into Ruaha’s rugged wilderness.
The Great Ruaha River and its seasonal tributaries attract wildlife through an enormous landscape of baobabs, woodland and open country.
Elephants are one of Ruaha’s great signatures, while lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, buffalo and numerous antelope species inhabit the wider ecosystem.
Ruaha is also renowned for its African wild dog population, although sightings are always a matter of good fortune.
The real difference is space.
You can drive for long stretches without seeing another safari vehicle.
Just road.
Dust.
Baobabs.
And whatever is waiting around the next bend.

DAY 06 / RUAHA - GO WHERE THE ROAD DOESN’T.
Your final full safari day belongs entirely to Ruaha.
Take another game drive into a different part of the park or, depending on your selected camp and operating conditions, add a guided walking safari for a completely different perspective.
On foot, the wilderness becomes smaller and somehow larger at the same time.
Tracks matter.
Sounds matter.
Even the wind suddenly has information in it.
Alternatively, remain in the vehicle and spend the day following the river systems and searching for predators.
Return to camp for your final sundowner.
Two wildernesses.
One last African night.

DAY 07 / RUAHA → DAR ES SALAAM ONE LAST FLIGHT OUT OF THE WILD.
Enjoy your final breakfast in Ruaha.
Depending on your flight schedule, there may be time for a short morning game drive before transferring to the airstrip.
Board your scheduled bush flight toward Dar es Salaam.
From there, connect with your international journey, overnight in the city or continue onward to Zanzibar.
Which, incidentally, is a rather good place to recover from seven days of being gloriously distracted by wildlife.
