6-Day Across the Northern Wilds

OVERVIEW

GO FURTHER. STAY LONGER.

Some safaris are about fitting everything in. This one is about giving everything a little more room.

Over six days, travel from the baobab country of Tarangire to the ancient Ngorongoro Crater before spending three nights around the Serengeti. The extra time on the plains means less rushing between destinations and more opportunities to follow wildlife, explore different areas and simply stay when something remarkable is happening.

Comfortable lodges and tented camps soften the evenings. A private vehicle keeps the days entirely yours.

Because sometimes the best safari plan is having enough time to change the plan.

DAY 01 / TARANGIRE - WHERE ELEPHANTS OWN THE ROAD.

Meet your Wildpack guide in Arusha and travel toward Tarangire National Park.

The first baobabs announce your arrival long before any sign does.

Spend the day exploring a landscape of open savannah, woodland and seasonal river habitat. Tarangire is particularly celebrated for its elephant population, with family groups often moving between the river and surrounding plains.

Look beyond the elephants and you’ll find giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and numerous antelope species, while lions and leopards patrol the same landscape.

Enjoy lunch during the game drive before continuing into the afternoon.

Later, settle into your lodge or tented camp for your first evening in the bush.

DAY 02 / NGORONGORO CRATER - BELOW THE CRATER WALLS.

Start early and travel toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

From the rim, descend roughly 600 metres into the crater and spend the day exploring its extraordinary mosaic of grassland, woodland, marshes and freshwater pools.

Wildlife exists here in remarkable density. Look for prides of lions, large buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippos and hyenas. The endangered black rhino can also be found within the crater, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Stop for a picnic lunch before continuing across the crater floor.

Later, climb back toward the rim and settle into your accommodation in the highlands.

DAY 03 / SERENGETI - WATCH THE WORLD OPEN UP.

Leave the highlands behind and travel toward the Serengeti.

The transformation is gradual at first. Then suddenly the landscape seems to open in every direction.

Enter Serengeti National Park and begin game driving toward your tented camp.

The central Serengeti and surrounding plains support an extraordinary concentration of resident wildlife. Lions rest around granite kopjes, leopards favour riverine woodland and cheetahs use the open grasslands to their advantage.

Depending on the season, the Great Migration may add enormous herds of wildebeest and zebra to the picture.

Continue exploring until evening.

DAY 04 / SERENGETI - FOLLOW THE TRACKS. FORGET THE CLOCK.

Wake before the plains have properly decided what kind of day they’re going to have.

An early game drive gives you the chance to experience the Serengeti in cooler temperatures, when predators may still be active and the morning light stretches across the grasslands.

Your guide will follow tracks, recent sightings and animal behaviour rather than a predetermined circuit.

Spend time around rocky kopjes, river valleys and open plains searching for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants and the many herbivores that sustain the ecosystem.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush or return to camp for a midday break.

Then head back out.

DAY 05 / SERENGETI - STAY FOR ANOTHER STORY.

One Serengeti day is extraordinary.

Two lets you begin to understand the place.

Today gives you the freedom to explore further, revisit an interesting area or simply spend longer with whatever the wild delivers.

Perhaps you’ll find a leopard before breakfast. Perhaps the morning disappears watching elephants interact around a waterhole. During migration periods, your guide may dedicate the day to locating the herds and the predators following them.

Nothing needs to be rushed.

Sometimes the most memorable safari moment begins five minutes after everyone else drives away.

DAY 06 / SERENGETI → ARUSHA - ONE LAST LOOK BACK.

Wake for your final morning surrounded by the Serengeti.

Depending on your departure arrangement, enjoy an early game drive before beginning the journey back toward Arusha.

Travelling by road gives you one last passage across the Serengeti and Ngorongoro landscapes, with wildlife still appearing along the way.

For travellers who prefer to exchange several hours of road for one last aerial view of the plains, a scheduled flight from the Serengeti to Arusha can also be added.

Eventually, the wilderness gives way to town and the journey ends where it began.

The dust washes off.

The Serengeti tends not to.
