8 Days of Tanzania Untamed

OVERVIEW

THE WILD CHANGES EVERY MORNING.

This is the Northern Circuit with something most itineraries don’t have enough of: time.

Eight days takes you from elephant country beneath Tarangire’s ancient baobabs to the vast floor of Ngorongoro Crater and deep into the Serengeti, where several days allow you to stop treating the wilderness as somewhere you’re passing through.

Travel with your own Wildpack guide and private 4×4, staying in comfortable lodges and tented camps chosen to keep you close to each landscape.

There are fewer boxes to tick here.

More time to watch instead.

DAY 01 / ARUSHA - ARRIVE. EXHALE.

Welcome to Tanzania.

A Wildpack representative will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer you to your lodge in Arusha.

Today is deliberately easy. Settle in, recover from your flight and let the journey begin slowly.

Depending on your arrival time, you can relax at the lodge or explore a little of Arusha before meeting your safari guide and going through the adventure ahead.

Tomorrow, the city disappears behind you.

DAY 02 / TARANGIRE - WHERE THE GIANTS ROAM.

After breakfast, meet your guide and head toward Tarangire National Park.

Soon the landscape fills with giant baobabs, open woodland and the dusty tracks of elephant country.

Tarangire supports one of northern Tanzania’s most impressive elephant populations. Spend the day following family groups between the river and surrounding plains while also searching for giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, antelope and predators.

Stop for lunch before continuing through the afternoon.

There is no need to race from sighting to sighting. When something deserves more time, we give it more time.

DAY 03 / NGORONGORO CRATER - INTO AN ANCIENT WORLD.

Rise early and travel toward Ngorongoro.

From the crater rim, descend approximately 600 metres into one of Africa’s most remarkable natural landscapes.

The crater floor contains open grassland, woodland, wetlands and freshwater pools, creating habitat for an extraordinary concentration of wildlife.

Search for lions, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippos and hyenas as you cross the caldera. The endangered black rhino also survives here, making Ngorongoro one of northern Tanzania’s important areas for sightings.

Enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing your game drive and eventually climbing back toward the highlands.

DAY 04 / SERENGETI - THE ROAD BECOMES WILD.

After breakfast, leave the highlands and travel across the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward Serengeti National Park.

The journey becomes increasingly wild with every kilometre.

Mountains and highlands fall away. Grasslands stretch farther. Eventually the horizon seems to lose its edges entirely.

Enter the Serengeti and begin game driving toward your camp.

Look for lions around rocky kopjes, giraffes moving between acacias and cheetahs scanning the plains. Depending on the season, wildebeest and zebra from the Great Migration may also be moving through the wider ecosystem.

Arrive at your tented camp toward sunset.

DAY 05 / SERENGETI - LET THE WILD SET THE PACE.

Wake inside the Serengeti with an entire day ahead.

Set out early and follow the wildlife rather than a predetermined route. Your guide will read tracks, behaviour, weather and recent activity to decide where the day takes you.

Perhaps you’ll spend the morning with a pride of lions. Perhaps a leopard hidden in a tree changes the plan completely. Perhaps the plains fill with wildebeest and everything else becomes temporarily irrelevant.

Stop for a picnic lunch or return to camp for a midday break before heading out again.

The schedule remains flexible for one very good reason.

Wildlife doesn’t read itineraries.

DAY 06 / SERENGETI - STAY A LITTLE LONGER.

Another morning. Another blank page.

Today gives you the freedom to explore a different area of the Serengeti, return to somewhere promising from yesterday or simply spend longer with the sightings that deserve it.

Search the grasslands for cheetahs, follow riverine areas for leopards and watch for elephants moving between woodland and open plains.

During migration periods, your guide can adapt the day’s route according to the seasonal movement of the herds.

By now, the Serengeti has stopped feeling like a destination on your itinerary.

That’s precisely the idea.

DAY 07 / SERENGETI → NGORONGORO ONE LAST LOOK AT THE PLAINS.

Most itineraries would have moved on by now.

You haven’t.

Head out for another day across the plains, with enough time to explore without watching the clock.

This can also be an excellent morning to add an optional hot-air balloon safari, rising before dawn to watch the Serengeti wake from above before returning to the ground for breakfast and another day of game viewing.

Otherwise, stay with your guide and let the landscape decide the story.

Spend your final evening at camp beneath one of Africa’s biggest skies.

DAY 08 / ARUSHA - THE ROAD HOME. THE WILD STAYS.

Wake for your final morning in the Serengeti.

Depending on your departure arrangement, enjoy a short morning game drive before beginning the return to Arusha.

The standard journey can continue overland through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, giving you one last long look at northern Tanzania as the wilderness gradually gives way to towns and farms.

Alternatively, a scheduled flight from the Serengeti to Arusha can be arranged for travellers who prefer a shorter journey back.

Arrive in Arusha for your onward arrangements or airport transfer.

The safari ends here.

The stories probably won’t.
