6-Day Machame Route

OVERVIEW

SAME MOUNTAIN. FASTER RHYTHM.

The six-day Machame Route follows much of the same spectacular trail as our seven-day version, but with a more demanding schedule.

Begin beneath Kilimanjaro’s rainforest canopy before climbing onto the Shira Plateau. Walk high toward Lava Tower, descend beneath the Barranco Wall and continue toward Barafu, where the final summit attempt begins in the middle of the night.

The difference is time.

This itinerary combines sections that are separated in the seven-day climb, resulting in longer trekking days and less time for acclimatization.

For fit, experienced and appropriately prepared trekkers, it offers a compact route to Uhuru Peak.

For most first-time high-altitude climbers, however, we’d generally steer toward the 7-Day Machame or 8-Day Lemosho.

Kilimanjaro isn’t going anywhere.

There’s rarely a prize for rushing it.

DAY 01 / MACHAME GATE → MACHAME CAMP - START BENEATH THE CANOPY.

After meeting your mountain team and completing registration at Machame Gate, begin climbing through Kilimanjaro’s lush montane rainforest.

The trail rises steadily through dense vegetation where moss covers the trees and monkeys may occasionally appear overhead.

Today is your introduction.

Find your rhythm.

Listen to your guide.

And learn two words you’ll hear repeatedly over the coming days:

Pole pole.

Slowly, slowly.

Arrive at Machame Camp for your first night on Kilimanjaro.

DAY 02 / MACHAME CAMP → SHIRA CAMP - LEAVE THE FOREST. FIND THE MOUNTAIN.

The landscape begins changing quickly today.

Climb beyond the rainforest and enter heath and moorland as vegetation becomes shorter and views become increasingly dramatic.

Continue over rocky ridges toward the Shira Plateau.

On a clear day, Kibo appears ahead while Mount Meru rises behind you across the plains.

Reach Shira Camp later in the day.

The temperature drops after sunset.

The stars sharpen.

And Kilimanjaro suddenly feels considerably more serious.

OVERNIGHT
Shira Camp

ALTITUDE
Approx. 3,840 m

MEALS
Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

DAY 03 / SHIRA → LAVA TOWER → BARRANCO - GO HIGH. COME BACK DOWN.

Leave Shira and continue into Kilimanjaro’s increasingly barren alpine landscape.

The trail climbs toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,600 metres.

This is an important acclimatization point.

Move slowly and allow your guides to monitor how your body is responding to the elevation.

After reaching the Lava Tower area, descend toward Barranco.

The lower sleeping altitude provides the classic climb-high, sleep-low profile.

Eventually, Barranco Camp appears beneath the southern face of Kibo.

And above camp?

A wall.

Quite a large one.

Tomorrow morning, we’re going up it.

OVERNIGHT
Barranco Camp

ALTITUDE
Approx. 3,950 m

HIGHEST POINT
Approx. 4,600 m

MEALS

DAY 04 / BARRANCO → KARANGA → BARAFU - OVER THE WALL. TOWARD THE SUMMIT.

This is where the six-day itinerary shows its teeth.

Begin by climbing the famous Barranco Wall.

Despite its dramatic appearance from below, the route is normally a steep scramble rather than technical climbing.

Your guides will lead you through the safest line.

Reach the top and continue across ridges before descending toward Karanga Valley.

On the seven-day route, Karanga becomes home for the night.

Not today.

After a break, continue upward through increasingly barren terrain toward Barafu Camp.

By the time you arrive, you’ll have completed a substantial trekking day.

Eat.

Hydrate.

Prepare your summit equipment.

Then rest.

Because in a few hours, we’re moving again.

OVERNIGHT
Barafu Camp

ALTITUDE
Approx. 4,640 m

MEALS
Breakfast · Lunch · Early Dinner

DAY 05 / BARAFU → UHURU PEAK → MWEKA CAMP - MIDNIGHT. HEADLAMPS ON.

Wake around midnight.

Layer up.

Eat something.

Step outside.

The mountain above you is almost completely dark.

Begin the slow climb toward the crater rim.

The air becomes thinner with every metre.

Your guide controls the pace.

No racing.

No unnecessary energy spent.

Just another step.

And another.

Hours later, reach Stella Point at approximately 5,756 metres.

The horizon begins to glow.

Continue around the crater rim toward the highest point on Kilimanjaro.

UHURU PEAK

5,895 M

Africa’s highest point.

The summit itself may only last a few minutes.

Getting there took five days.

Take your photographs, look across the glaciers and let the moment sink in.

Then begin descending.

Return past Barafu before continuing down toward Mweka Camp.

By the time you reach camp, you’ll have completed an enormous day.

Sleep will not require negotiation.

OVERNIGHT
Mweka Camp

SUMMIT
5,895 m

MEALS
Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

DAY 06 / MWEKA CAMP → MWEKA GATE - BACK TO OXYGEN.

After breakfast, descend through increasingly lush vegetation.

The air gets warmer.

The trees get taller.

Breathing gets easier.

Continue through the rainforest until reaching Mweka Gate.

Complete the final park formalities and receive your summit certificate if you’ve successfully reached the qualifying summit point.

Meet your transfer vehicle and return toward Arusha or Moshi.

Six days ago, Kilimanjaro was something you were planning to climb.

Now it’s something you’ve done.

That’s a much better sentence.
