6-Day Marangu Route
OVERVIEW
A ROOF ON THE MOUNTAIN.
Marangu is Kilimanjaro’s classic hut route.
Instead of sleeping in tents, trekkers stay in designated mountain huts along the trail, making this a distinctly different experience from Lemosho, Machame and Rongai.
The route approaches from the southeast, beginning in lush rainforest before climbing through open moorland toward the stark alpine landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo.
Our six-day itinerary includes an additional acclimatization day at Horombo before moving higher toward Kibo.
Then comes summit night.
A midnight departure.
A long climb through darkness.
And, if the mountain allows it, sunrise from 5,895 metres above sea level.
A bed won’t make Kilimanjaro easy.
But after a long day of climbing, having a roof isn’t a terrible idea.
DAY 01 / MARANGU GATE → MANDARA HUT - WALK INTO THE GREEN.
Your climb begins at Marangu Gate.
After registration and meeting your mountain crew, enter Kilimanjaro’s lush montane rainforest.
The trail climbs steadily beneath a thick canopy where mosses, ferns and enormous trees create a world very different from the alpine landscapes waiting above.
Black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys may occasionally appear in the forest.
Take your time.
Find your walking rhythm.
Eventually arrive at Mandara Hut for your first night on the mountain.
One day down.
A considerable amount of up still ahead.

DAY 02 / MANDARA HUT → HOROMBO HUT - LEAVE THE FOREST. MEET THE MOUNTAIN.
After breakfast, continue upward.
The rainforest gradually disappears and the landscape opens into heath and moorland.
On clear days, the views become spectacular.
Mawenzi rises in one direction.
Kibo appears in another.
And somewhere beyond it sits the summit you’re walking toward.
The trail continues steadily across the open landscape before reaching Horombo Hut.
Temperatures drop quickly once the sun disappears.
Welcome to the higher mountain.

DAY 03 / HOROMBO - GO HIGHER. COME BACK TO SLEEP.
Today, you’re staying at Horombo.
But you’re not necessarily staying still.
After breakfast, take an acclimatization hike with your guide, often toward the Zebra Rocks area or another suitable higher point depending on conditions and the team’s plan.
Walk higher.
Spend time at elevation.
Then return to Horombo to sleep.
It’s a simple strategy with an important purpose: giving your body more time to adapt before moving toward Kibo.
The summit isn’t getting away.
Today is about making yourself more ready to meet it.

DAY 04 / HOROMBO → KIBO HUT - CROSS INTO THE HIGH DESERT.
Leave Horombo and continue toward Kibo.
Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert.
The route crosses the broad saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo.
It’s a stark landscape.
Rock.
Dust.
Sky.
And one enormous volcanic dome directly ahead.
Eventually reach Kibo Hut.
This is your final base before the summit.
Eat.
Hydrate.
Prepare your warm layers, gloves, headlamp and summit equipment.
Then try to rest.
Around midnight, someone is going to wake you up.
For a very good reason.
OVERNIGHT
Kibo Hut
ALTITUDE
Approx. 4,700 m

DAY 05 / KIBO → UHURU PEAK → HOROMBO - THE LONGEST NIGHT. THE HIGHEST MORNING.
Wake around midnight.
Dress in layers.
Eat something warm.
Switch on your headlamp.
Then step into the darkness.
The ascent toward the crater rim is slow and demanding.
Altitude, cold and steep terrain make this the hardest section of the journey.
Your guide controls the pace.
Pole pole.
One step.
Another.
And another.
Eventually, reach Gilman’s Point at approximately 5,685 metres on Kilimanjaro’s crater rim.
For some climbers, reaching the rim is already an extraordinary achievement.
But Uhuru is still ahead.
Continue around the crater rim as morning begins breaking across Tanzania.
Pass toward Stella Point and keep climbing.
Then finally:
UHURU PEAK
5,895 M
Africa’s highest point.
Take the photograph.
Celebrate.
Look at the glaciers.
Then put the camera away for a moment.
You’ve spent days walking toward this view.
Give it a minute.
Afterward, begin the long descent back toward Kibo and continue farther down to Horombo Hut.
Tonight, breathing feels easier.
Sleep usually does too.

DAY 06 / HOROMBO → MARANGU GATE - WALK BACK INTO THE GREEN.
After breakfast, begin the final descent.
Pass through the moorland before returning to Kilimanjaro’s rainforest.
With every kilometre, the air becomes warmer and richer.
Eventually reach Marangu Gate and complete the final park formalities.
Successful climbers receive their summit certificates before meeting the transfer vehicle back to Moshi or Arusha.
Six days ago, you walked through this gate looking upward.
Now you’re walking out knowing exactly what’s up there.
